Chelsea target £60m Hakim Ziyech replacement as Mikel Arteta makes Arsenal stance clear

Chelsea target £60m Hakim Ziyech replacement as Mikel Arteta makes Arsenal stance clear

Chelsea will launch a move for James Maddison if Hakim Ziyech leaves Stamford Bridge this summer, but could face competition from Arsenal for the Leicester midfielder.

The Moroccan has struggled to settle in the Premier League since his move from Ajax 12 months ago and his time in England could be cut short after just one season.

But according to football.london the Blues have a plan in place if he does depart the club with Maddison one of their top targets as a potential replacement.

The same report also says that Mikel Arteta is a ‘huge fan’ of the England midfielder and is a Gunners target this summer as they enter a major rebuild for next season.

However, Maddison’s fee could be a stumbling block for Arsenal.

Leicester have not indicated how much they would demand for the 24-year-old, but the midfielder is currently valued at between €50m-€70m (£43m-£60m) via the CIES Football Observatory.

The Foxes are notoriously shrewd negotiators as they held out for £50m for Ben Chilwell, who went to Chelsea, and also raked in £80m for Harry Maguire as Manchester United smashed the transfer record for a centre-half.

A report claimed the Foxes had placed a £100m price tag on Maddison last summer as United were interested in signing the playmaker, but that asking price has likely fallen due to an injury-hit campaign for the player, as well as the reduced money clubs have at their disposal due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Maddison signed a bumper contract in August 2020 and is tied down at the King Power Stadium until 2024 which means Leicester will have the upper hand if Chelsea and Arsenal are serious about making a move during the window.

Maddison said at the time of penning his extension: “I’m so happy to sign a new contract for this Football Club. It’s an incredibly exciting time to be a Leicester City player with so many positive things happening on and off the pitch and I’m delighted to be part of that.

“What we’ve achieved as a Club this season is a huge step forward for us and I know there’s so much more to come from this team.

“I’ve enjoyed every moment since joining Leicester City.

“The supporters have been incredible to me and we’ve a fantastic set of players in that dressing room who are determined to show what we’re capable of doing together in both Europe and the Premier League next season.”
