Former Manchester United Goalkeeper Sergio Romero Has Signed For Serie A Side Venezia

The 34-year-old has been a free agent since leaving United at the end of the 2020-21 campaign and posted videos of himself training in Buenos Aires on Instagram while he was without a club. He has signed a contract until the end of the season.

Romero spent six seasons in Manchester but only made seven league appearances, acting as David de Gea’s back-up for the majority of his stay. Romero was often used as United’s first-choice in the Europa League, and was in goal for their 2-0 victory over Ajax in the 2017 final.

Last season, however, Romero fell behind Dean Henderson in the pecking order and did not make a competitive appearance for United. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer publicly confirmed the goalkeeper could leave in January but no move materialised.

Venezia, in their first season back in Serie A in 20 years, have endured a testing start to their campaign. The Venice side sit 17th, with just one win and two draws from their opening seven fixtures.

Niki Maenpaa the 36-year-old former Bristol City and Stoke City man — has been the club’s first-choice stopper for the majority of the season, but has conceded 12 goals in his six appearances.

Romero is Argentina’s most capped goalkeeper with 96 appearances for his country, having retired from international duty in 2018.
