Nevin says he wouldn't swap Chelsea defender for anyone in world football

Pat Nevin was adamant that he would pick Reece James to start in the Chelsea defence over any player in circulation currently.

Speaking to Alex Goldberg, Nevin insisted that James was his first choice right sided defender in modern football right now.

Looking across the sporting landscape, the 21-year-old does have some decent opposition in his position.

Inter Milan’s Achraf Hakimi, who has been linked with Chelsea, is one of the hottest properties on the market.

A fair few of James’ England teammates have strong credentials – Liverpool’s Trent-Alexander Arnold, Kyle Walker of Manchester City and Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid.

Joao Cancelo was voted into the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

But Nevin held firm on his choice of picking the Chelsea right-back ahead of any of the stellar names listed.

The ex-Blues wide man said: “I wouldn’t take any player above Reece James in his position in the world. I wouldn’t take anyone.

“I think he’s that amazing at defending, power, reading the game and as we know, his crossing ability is out of this world.”

James has risen from promising talent to a house hold name in the space of a few seasons.

It wasn’t long ago before he enjoyed a successful loan spell with Wigan Athletic in the Championship.

He is now a Champions League winner and potential starter for England at the European Championships.

And all of this has been achieved before his 22nd birthday.
